Hey! Suppose your words are a magnet.
What do you think?
Do they attract or repel your readers?
I have seen many copywriters struggle with writing personality-driven copy. It is important that your copy captures the reader’s attention because, nowadays, people are bombarded with information daily.
And you remember one thing: survival is for the fittest.
This means it is important your copy grabs the reader’s attention. So, you must be capable of writing copy that resonates with your reader.
I have decided to share with you a step-by-step guide that contains tips, techniques, and strategies that will help you transform your copywriting skills and become capable of writing dynamic and compelling copy.
So, let’s get started.
But before starting, I want to say one thing: You should read this guide completely because all the steps are connected.
Now, without wasting more time, Let’s dive in!
Storytelling
Storytelling is one of the best ways to add a personalization factor to your copy because stories help you connect with your reader on an emotional level, making your message impactful and memorable.
In this section, we are going to explore the top three methods that can help you transform your narrative into a story.
- Journey through history.
- A personal story.
- Transporting your reader to another place or time.
Journey through history
This approach helps you build a sense of timeless relevance, and it will add depth and context to your copy.
This method involves connecting your product or service with a historical event. You just have to think about how you can zoom in and out on anything or any moment in history. In this way, your story will back up your message.
Let’s take an example of the flower shop:
Suppose you have a follower shop and want to write a copy for a rose bouquet. You can connect your copy with the story of Cleopatra and Mark Antony. This story focuses on one Queen from Egypt who loves roses.
Make a historical journey based on a story like this Queen’s story and connect it with the emotions of love and passion, which actually show the representation of roses.
Pro tips:
- Do research and find out historical events related to your product or service.
- Then, to make it simple, highlight the key moments that will help you to align your message.
- Then, when you write, connect the past with the present, how it was and now still has its significance in modern times.
A Personal Story
This method allows you to make your copy relatable and authentic. It can also help you connect with your readers emotionally because they can visualize the human side of your brand.
Let’s take an example of me, Furqan Khan, a copywriter 😀:
If I tell you my personal story, I will show you my struggle, how many complicated projects I have done yet, the lessons I have learned, my failures, my management skills that transformed my workflow, etc.
In a nutshell, I will showcase all the important things connected with my journey as a copywriter because these things ultimately will help me build trust with my audience.
Transport Your Reader
Play with the reader’s imagination by using sensory-rich language and painting a picture that sparks their imagination.
You can use this approach by using scenarios that transport your reader to another place and time.
Let’s take the example of Switzerland:
So, instead of just writing about the attraction, paint a picture of snow-capped mountains, fresh air filling your lungs, pristine lakes, and a blue, clear sky with vibrant colors.
With this storytelling approach, your readers will feel like they are in Switzerland, amplifying their desire to experience this moment in person.
Make your Copy Conversational
In this section, we will explore another way to help you write dynamic copy with personality.
The approach I am talking about is a conversational approach. Writing conversational copy helps you build a connection with your reader and makes your copy relatable.
The conversational approach to writing is tricky because the person is not present with you. So, in order to make the copy conversational, there are view techniques that can help you write in a conversational tone.
- Ask Questions.
- Personalization.
- Suggest and instruct.
Ask Question
This is one of the best techniques for engaging readers because asking questions encourages them to think about what you are saying and gives them a sense of involvement.
Personalization
Another technique for making your copy more conversational is to give it a personal touch. When writing your copy, use the words “you” and “your.” This will create a sense of intimacy, as it will give the impression to your readers that you are talking with them directly.
Suggest and Instruct
In your copy, give your reader suggestions and instructions for taking action. This will help your reader understand your product or service.
Use Contractions
Contractions are an important factor in making your writing more natural and informal. However, it is important to maintain a balance and avoid using too many contractions to ensure clarity and readability.
Example of contractions:
Contracted Form | Normal form |
I’m | (I am) |
You’re | (you are) |
It’s | (it is) |
They’re | (they are) |
Don’t | (do not) |
Can’t | (cannot) |
When you need to write in a formal tone, avoid contractions. Use it only when you want to write in a friendly or casual tone.
Try Metaphor
In simple words, a metaphor is when you compare two things, often unlike things. Using this approach can make your copy memorable and persuasive.
You can incorporate metaphor into your copy by connecting two concepts in a creative way. You just need to find a surprising comparison, such as thinking about two things that are different from each other but share similar qualities.
Break the rules
In school and college, we have learned to write in an academic context, which is fine for essays, letters, etc.
However, when it comes to writing a copy, the main grammar rules are very useful because they make your copy clear and readable.
However, certain rules are now outdated. They make your copy dull and boring, so it is important to break them to make your copy more characterful and snappier.
So, I have made a list of three rules that you should break to make your copy dynamic.
Rule 1 Start Sentences with “But,” “Because,” and “And.”
Do you remember in school, our teachers always telling us not to start our sentences with “but,” “Because,” or “and?”
Forget that!
Use these words to make sentences direct and engaging. They will add energy to your copy.
Rule 2 Use Broken Sentences
Break your sentences to make your writing impactful. This practice will add personality and drama to your writing.
Rule 3 Vary Paragraph length
Our teacher also said each paragraph should contain four to five sentences, but we forgot. When all paragraphs have the same number of sentences, your copy will be boring. Varying your paragraph length will help you engage your reader.
Conclusion
So, now that this guide has ended, I hope you have learned valuable tips and techniques that will help you enhance your copywriting skills.
By incorporating a storytelling approach, conversational language, contractions, metaphors, and breaking the rules, you can transform your copy from ordinary to dynamic. These approaches will also help you write with personality.
Just remember to practice these techniques and tips, experiment with these methods, have fun, and let your unique voice shine through.
